Amputations

Boston Amputation Injuries

It is one thing to lose a finger, hand, foot, arm, or leg to save one's life when cancer or a blood clot is life-threatening. As painful as this is, the patient is grateful to have a second chance at life, even with diminished abilities.

But when an amputation occurs as a result of someone else's negligence, the trauma may seem much more bitter, because of the perception or reality that the accident could have been prevented.

After you have Lost an Arm, Leg, Hand, or Foot in an Accident

If you have lost an arm, leg, hand, or foot in a serious accident in Massachusetts, contact Kenneth Martin Knee to schedule a free initial consultation and preliminary case analysis with an experienced lawyer.

When an Accident was not Really an Accident

A motorcycle accident, an auto collision, or an industrial accident is rarely a true accident. More often, motor vehicle accidents and construction site accidents happen because someone made a wrong turn, sold a defective product (such as industrial equipment), or failed to perform safety inspections as recommended and required.

A top priority in your limb amputation case from a legal standpoint will be to determine negligence was a factor, and if so, to identify the negligent parties.

Does Loss of Limb Mean Loss of Livelihood?

The other main aspect of your case will be an analysis of the significance of your loss to your ability to work and live normally as before due to your newly impaired mobility or flexibility. For example, a professional concert pianist who loses a finger has a much greater loss in terms of dollars and cents than does someone who talks for a living.

In some cases, a person may be able to return to a near-normal life through reattachment surgery or with use of a prosthesis. For example, this may be the case for a forest ranger who loses a foot in a serious accident involving limb cutting tools or any other type of landscaping machine such as a power saw.

Compensation for Surgery, Therapy, and Prosthetic Feet or Hands

The more optimistic the person is, the better his or her prospects for a productive recovery will be. However, there will be expenses after any accidental amputation. Nerve damage may mean that multiple surgeries will be required, as well as ongoing rehabilitative therapy, pain management, and purchase and care of the prosthetic limbs.

My strength as a personal injury attorney is my ability to put the pieces of the puzzle together. An amputation or other catastrophic injury case contains many parts, and my goal is to bring them together to maximize the client's likelihood of obtaining full compensation.
